Can’t get there from here? Think again!

August 18, 2011

Despite the self-proclaimed truth of the Yankee phrase “You can’t get there from here,” there’s a whole world of history to prove otherwise. You most certainly can get there from here! All you need is some creative bother-be-gone mojo to loosen things up and tease apart the tangle that’s keeping you stuck. This month’s creativity prompt will assist you in moving from here to there — with pleasure.

All you need is paper and pen (and that bother-be-gone mojo) to get started with these simple steps.

  1. Start by thinking of a scenario in your life where the phrase “I can’t get there from here” seems real and keeps you rooted in place.
  2. At the top of the paper, write the word HERE, and describe where you are now — the details of the problem.
  3. Turn the page over and write the word THERE at the bottom, and describe where you want to go — your desired outcome.
  4. Now, to keep creative brain juiced up and logical brain switched off, choose an object from this list: ladder, spoon, duct tape, flying saucer, hammer, kite, peanut butter.
  5. Then in stream-of-consciousness style, describe how you will use this chosen object to get you from here to there. Use your imagination — allow yourself to be nonsensical. Shush your inner critic and let your mind wander. Just write — fill the page — front to back.
  6. When your page is filled, go back and read what you’ve written. Circle any words or phrases that pop out at you. Use them as a jumping-off point to creatively solve your problem. An alternative to using one of the objects I’ve listed is to come up with one of your own by finishing this sentence: I could get from here to there, if only I had a ____________ (fill in the blank). Complete the exercise using your word, as outlined.

Be silly and have fun with this exercise! Get yourself unstuck and uprooted. And if you want to share, I’d love to hear how you used these objects to get to your there.
