Sense Your Way There

June 16, 2011

In honor of June and all its expansive, light-filled glory, here’s an easy creativity prompt that can help you open to new ideas and possibilities.

It’s simple.

Just use your five senses – sight, smell, touch, taste and sound – to illustrate the words and concepts listed below. You can write, or use art materials (like crayons, paint, a camera, etc.), or cut images from magazines to collage your ideas. Use whatever method most inspires you to create five specific images or concrete examples — one for each sense — for the following list.

Do it everyday for a week and watch how easy it is to open and expand:

  • Playfulness – What does playfulness (look like, smell like, feel like to touch, taste like, sound like) to you today?
  • Ceremony – What does ceremony (look like, smell like, feel like to touch, taste like, sound like) to you today?
  • Disappointment – What does disappointment (look like, smell like, feel like to touch, taste like, sound like) to you today?
  • Beauty – What does beauty (look like, smell like, feel like to touch, taste like, sound like) to you today?
  • Compromise – What does compromise (look like, smell like, feel like to touch, taste like, sound like) to you today?

And why not reach for an aha! moment and try a sixth sense image:

  • Risk – What does risk feel like (feel with your heart rather than your hands) to you today? Notice your emotions around the idea. Is your intuition urging you to expand your comfort zone and take a risk today?

Now, have some fun! I can’t wait to hear all the sweet and surprising ways you expanded. Do tell …
